Helping Teachers Stretch Their Classroom Budgets
TRCNB makes it easier for North Bay teachers to keep their classrooms stocked without spending out of pocket. Through our free “Teacher Shopping” events and on-site store, public school educators can select essential supplies—like notebooks, pencils, backpacks, and art materials—so students have what they need to learn.
We complement these events with special backpack drives, seasonal distributions, and, when possible, supply delivery for teachers who can’t attend in person, ensuring more classrooms benefit from our resources across Napa and surrounding counties. By pairing TRCNB’s free supplies with additional funding and donation programs, we help teachers stretch their classroom budgets and create well‑equipped, welcoming learning environments for every student.

Teacher Funding Resources
Stretch Your Classroom Budget With Free Resources
In addition to the free classroom supplies you can pick up at the Teacher Resource Center of the North Bay (TRCNB), educators can tap into a variety of online, local, and mail-based programs to stock their classrooms without spending out of pocket.
The resources below are a starting point to help you combine TRCNB support with grants, donations, and other free materials.
Start With TRCNB
TRCNB provides free classroom supplies to eligible educators in our region through our on-site “store” and seasonal events. You can access basic classroom essentials at no cost, helping to reduce your personal spending on school supplies.
Browse Online Donation Platforms
These platforms allow you to request or receive funding for specific classroom needs. Many local teachers use them alongside TRCNB visits.
Educators create a classroom page, share it with their community, and receive flexible funding from individual donors, corporate partners, and grants. Teachers can then order the supplies they need from an online marketplace, with items shipped directly to their school.
DonorsChoose lets public school teachers post classroom projects or request specific materials, such as books, technology, or flexible seating. Once a project is funded, DonorsChoose purchases the items and ships them directly to the school, so you don’t have to handle the funds yourself.
Online Wish Lists (e.g., Amazon Wish List)
Teachers can create shareable wish lists of classroom supplies that families, community members, and local businesses can purchase and send straight to the classroom. This can be a helpful way to involve your school community in ongoing classroom needs.
Explore Local Charitable Programs and Free Stores
In addition to TRCNB, check for regional and statewide programs that support teachers.
Back-to-School Drives and Backpack Giveaways
Many communities host annual backpack giveaways and school supply drives in partnership with nonprofits, businesses, and school districts. These events can provide free supplies directly to students and classrooms before the school year begins. TRCNB provides support to both Napa and Solano County Department of Child Support Services for their annual backpack drives.
Find Free Supplies and Resources by Mail
A number of organizations provide classroom materials and educational content that can be shipped directly to schools.
Various programs mail free posters, magazines, DVDs, and other educational resources to classrooms, often tied to topics such as health, science, or safety. Some companies sponsor seasonal “welcome back” packs that include cleaning and health-related supplies for classrooms. Some initiatives help classrooms obtain devices or internet access, particularly in schools with limited technology budgets. These programs may have specific eligibility criteria and limited application windows, so planning ahead is important.
Apply for Grants, Scholarships, and Funding Opportunities
Educators in Napa and across California can apply for grants and scholarships to support classroom projects, professional development, and student experiences. The options below are examples and may change from year to year, so be sure to check each site for current details and deadlines.
Local and Regional Opportunities
Contra Costa County
Chamberlin Education Foundation – Gratitude Grants
West Contra Costa teachers can apply for Gratitude Grants, which provide flexible funding for classroom needs and projects. These mini-grants are designed to recognize educators and help offset out-of-pocket expenses.
EdFund West – Classroom Grants
EdFund West offers classroom grants for West Contra Costa Unified School District educators, with a focus on arts, creativity, and project-based learning. Mini-grants can help cover supplies, field trips, and other hands-on learning experiences for students.
Philanthropic Ventures Foundation – Special Education Resource Grants
Special Education Resource Grants provide up to a set amount for public school teachers and therapists in Alameda, Contra Costa, and Solano counties to purchase classroom supplies, fund field trips, or support professional development. These grants are designed to enhance learning experiences for students with special needs.
For more opportunities, you can also reference regional lists like KIDS for the BAY’s funding resources, which include grants that serve Alameda and Contra Costa teachers.
Lake County

Regional and Special Education Grants

Educators should review program guidelines to confirm which districts and grade levels qualify.
Sonoma County
Sonoma County Office of Education (SCOE) – Educator Resources
SCOE provides a teacher portal with instructional resources, professional learning opportunities, and recognition programs for Sonoma County educators. While not all supports are direct classroom grants, they can connect teachers to regional funding opportunities and curriculum resources.
North Coast Teacher Induction / Regional Support
The North Coast Teacher Induction Program, housed at SCOE, supports new teachers across multiple counties, including Sonoma and Lake. Participating districts may offer stipends, mentoring, or access to professional learning funds as part of their induction programs.
Yolo County
Regional Grants and Foundation Support
Some multi-county funds housed at nearby community foundations or nonprofits serve Yolo, Solano, and Napa counties, including scholarships and education-related funds. These may support student scholarships, enrichment activities, or classroom projects, depending on the fund’s focus.
Environmental and Field Trip Grants
Regional grant lists like those compiled by KIDS for the BAY often include environmental education and field trip funding that can be accessed by Yolo and neighboring county educators, especially for science and outdoor learning. Teachers planning field-based experiences should check for transportation or program-specific grants.
Statewide and California-Focused Grants
The California Department of Education maintains an “Available Funding” page listing open education grant opportunities for schools and districts.
California Teachers Association (CTA) offers scholarships, grants, and awards to support teachers’ professional growth and classroom projects.
Various grant portals aggregate teacher-focused funding opportunities for California educators.

Educators and school leaders can search Grants.gov for current federal funding opportunities relevant to their school or district.
Tips for Using These Resources
To make the most of these opportunities, consider the following strategies:
Register early and keep profiles updated
Set up accounts on donation platforms such as AdoptAClassroom.org and DonorsChoose and complete all required information, so you are eligible when funding or giveaways become available.
Check eligibility and documentation
Many programs require proof of teaching status, school affiliation, or that you serve a specific grade level or subject area. Keep digital copies of your credentials and school information handy to streamline applications.
Layer your resources
Combine multiple sources—TRCNB supplies, online donations, local drives, and mailed materials—to fully stock your classroom and reduce your personal spending. Consider creating a simple yearly plan (e.g., grant applications in spring, supply drives in summer, donation campaigns in fall).
Engage families and community partners
Share your online wish lists, grant-funded projects, or donation pages with families, local businesses, and community organizations to build ongoing support for your classroom. Clear communication about how resources will be used can increase trust and participation.
